First time seeing Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I got a tape with three different concert appearances of MO with BIlly Cobham playing drums and I've NEVER seen ANYONE play like that.

Never. I was left laughing and shaking my head at just how powerfully he could play but at the same time be smooth and musical and creative. ANd he looked so in control and confident but playing this totally ripping stuff with serious single stroke rolls and paradiddles.

It was ridiculous. I've sat behind Billy before and have seen other recordings of him playing and always thought it was cool and interesting, but this sh*t blew me away. You can see exactly what Simon Phillips picked up from him and of course, Chambers. They are both great players, but there's just no comparison between their styles and techniques and Billy's.

Wow...highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen him play in that band getting their hands on a recording. I read once where BC said the live recording of Mahavishnu, Between Nothingness and Eternity didn't really reflect what that band could do and he was right.

I was 18 when Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" solo album came out. I was a student at the Armed Forces School of Music at the time and all the drummers were blown away by Billy's grace, power and speed!

A few years before, Billy was an Army student at that same school when he was about 19.

He really gave us something to shoot for....
